Leg Treatments

Hip pain is most commonly due to a strain to the muscles or the capsule around the joint, but other problems such as early degenerative changes or a ‘trochanteric bursitis’ are not uncommon.

Chiropractic treatment of hip pain will depend on the cause of the problem. Often mobilization or manipulation is used in combination with soft tissue techniques of massage and possibly ultrasound.

Knee pain can be disabling, especially when it restricts walking or using stairs. The knee is not one joint but a combination of four bony joints and the tissues round them. The major structures involved in discomfort in the knee are;

  • cartilages (meniscus) that cushion the inside of the joint
  • collateral and cruciate ligaments that provide stability
  • joint capsule and fluid filled rubbing pads called bursa.
  • muscles that control and move the joints especially the quadriceps muscles of the thigh.

Chiropractors manage knee pain by first performing a biomechanical assessment of the joint to ascertain which tissues are involved in the problem. Treatment is aimed at normalizing function and improving stability and strength to the area through a combination of advice, exercises and direct hands on therapy to the joint.

Sportsmen and women may suffer muscular injuries such as groin, hamstring or calf strains or sprains to the ligaments of the leg.

Chiropractic treatment of sporting injuries has long been recognized as highly successful and many first class and international teams use chiropractic to keep their players performing at peak fitness.
